What is a Mortal Shell II build actually made of?

A Mortal Shell II build is four live slots, not a class name. You possess a shell, swing one melee from the weapons list, wear one Seal, and seat at most ten tarstones. The sidearm is a Resolve tap on top of that — Nail Shot or the Forgotten Crossbow can finish a stagger, but they do not become a fifth class. There is no stamina bar and no talent-tree class. Verified pairing habits below are community-observed; exact percents stay TBA.

Four slots that actually fire

The Shell is the host kit: Tiel’s dash, Proxima’s hook-and-lightning, Eredrim’s riposte tank. Glimpses buy that host’s memories. The melee is the string you time — Iconoclast at the start, then Axe and Dagger, a heavy blade, or whatever named pickup actually changes reach or weight. The Seal is the one defensive tool: Infinite, Untarnished, or Vatra. Swap it at a beacon when the fight type changes. Tarstones cap at ten: 4 Support + 2 Combat + 2 Infusion + 2 Ability. Franz etches the ten you wear. A bag of 75 names is a collect, not a loadout.

What is not a build

Harros is prologue only. Do not park Glimpses on him and do not list him as a ninth host. A “full catalog” Tarstone kit is a later problem — ten is the wear cap on day one. A fourth Seal near Marrow Keep disables achievements; leave it for NG+. Ranked “best Mortal Shell II builds” boards that invent S-tier DPS are not a first-run plan. This page will not reprint one.

Franz is cheap; Glimpses stick

Push the melee you actually swing — Iconoclast to about +3 / +4 is the legal opening spend; later finds often start around +3 (community-observed). Weapon paths respec more freely than Shell talent spend. That is why the next question is which host deserves the Glimpse budget, not which portrait looks like an S-tier thumbnail.

Which early Shell lane should I commit Glimpses to?

Glimpses are limited. Community-observed: about 27 finish four skill lines on one host. A first run can unlock most of the eight shells; it cannot max eight trees. Pick one early lane. A second host is allowed only when that host actually changes how you win — usually Eredrim after the Warden, not a third tree beside Tiel and Proxima. Unlock rooms live on the shells page; this table is the Glimpse decision.

Anyone elseLater gates (Heart of Vatra, Blood Offering, …)Switchable body with a thin treeDo not open a third full tree on a first run

Proxima — lightning, then a Resolve poke

Proxima the Broodseeker is the north Widow’s Overlook possess. Observed signature: Biosampler — hook pull into lightning. Play her as grab-and-punish, not a second Tiel. Pair the kit with Forgotten Crossbow (Merrick’s first map → Flooded Village crypt after a key) or keep Nail Shot as a tap. Both sidearms spend Resolve; one or two shots after the hook is the legal spend, not a magazine dump. Community: a perforation-style Tarstone rides the crossbow — stone name TBA. Duality only pays if the melee is already dual-wield. Vatra or Infinite is the Seal: Harden when adds or angles are messy, Parry when the tell is clean.

If you find a Grisha pup drop, it is a consumable / summon — exact item name TBA. Proxima lightning plus that summon can flinch a large Grisha (some writeups alias Gishca; this page uses Grisha). Do not hold the lane hostage waiting for the pup. If the ranked-abilities clip at 01:00–01:30 is a talking head, recapture Biosampler from `tXCyQ-prSMM` 21:36–22:16 (Proxima + summons).

Tiel — dash that must be early

Tiel the Acolyte is the southeast Widow’s Overlook corpse — often the earliest keep. Observed kit: Lingering Shadow, Shadow Strike, Shadow Dash. Dash just before you are hit. A perfect dash grants Shadow and adds stagger. A late dash is a dodge that spent the window. Pair him with a faster melee: Axe and Dagger (Shrine of Trials) or stay on Iconoclast until that dual-wield pickup. Infinite is the Seal if you can time the dash and the Parry on the same tell; if the dash is already late, do not also miss a Parry — swap to Untarnished while you learn. Wounding sits in a Mushroom Village chest near his corpse if you walk that village.

Eredrim — after the Warden, then take the hit

Eredrim the Venerable unlocks when you beat the Warden. He is never the first corpse. Observed tools: low-health executes, Slaughterer stacks off riposte, and a shoulder charge. Spend Glimpses here when trades are what kill you, not because a ranked list said “tank is S.” Pair him with a heavy: Great Martyr’s Blade (Martyr’s Tomb / prison), Obsidian Hammer (Obsidianite Mines), or Veteran’s Battle Axe (pin TBA; running heavy is the community tell). Untarnished or Vatra is the Seal — Guard / Perfect Guard while you learn ugly wind-ups, Harden when you need absorb plus stagger-back. Infinite is optional only if the riposte window is already clean.

Once the host is parked, the next job is the pairing you actually wear into the next room — Seal plus melee, not another Glimpse dip.

How do I pair a Seal and a melee?

Every playable Shell can swing every melee. Switching Tiel for Eredrim does not unequip Iconoclast. The pair is timing: a dash host wants a string you can abort or finish before the next tell; a tank host can afford recovery that would get Tiel killed. You still wear one Seal. The table below is the mid-page call — Shell × weapon × Seal × two or three stones — not an S-tier DPS board. Sidearm notes sit in the lanes above; this grid does not invent a gun class.

Seal follows the fight, not the portrait

Infinite (Parry) wants a readable 1v1 wind-up and a host who can cancel into it — Tiel’s dash plus Infinite is the high-skill pair if both timings land. Vatra (Harden) wants messy rooms: Proxima’s hook into a pack, or Eredrim eating a string so the riposte exists. Untarnished (Guard / Perfect Guard) is the learning Seal and the tank default — it cannot abort a swing into Guard, so do not plan “Heavy into Guard” on a Great Martyr’s Blade recovery. Full Seal rules sit on combat. Swap at a Beacon when the next boss changes the tell, not mid-string.

Melee follows recovery, not a ranked name

Keep Iconoclast through the opening unless a named melee changes the fight — dual-wield strings (Axe and Dagger / Axatana), weight (Martyr’s Blade, Hammer, Veteran’s Axe), or later reach (Black Needle after Sester’s Gate). Franz-split two dual-wield names for the same job is a waste. Weapon skills spend the same Resolve as Shell abilities and sidearm shots. If you dump Nail Shot, the blade skill and Biosampler are both dry. Pair the host and the blade here; find the corpse on weapons.

Stones are the last live slots. Most of them do not change the lane. A few do.

Which Tarstones change the lane?

Max ten equipped: 4 Support + 2 Combat + 2 Infusion + 2 Ability. Swap anytime — not Beacon-only. Support is the floor on every lane. The stones that change a lane are the Combat / Infusion picks that match the melee or the gun you already committed to. This is not a 75-row ranked board. Locations and etch rules live on tarstones.

Unwieldy / Tarblighted TrophyAbility · 35 / 80 ResolveOnly if you can bank the meter after the Shell skillYou press them by accident

Fill Support before you chase a “build-defining” Combat

Devout, Shattering, and Bulwark trigger off kills you already take. They do not care whether the host is Proxima or Eredrim. Gloombound is extra Gloom, not extra damage. Park those four. Then spend the two Combat holes on the stone that matches the weapon: Duality after Ravaged Tomb / Nochtean Gate if you dual-wield; Wounding if Tiel’s village chest is on the walk; perforation-style on the crossbow if Proxima actually shoots. Filling both Combat holes with gun stones while you never fire is a wasted pair.

Infusion and Ability are Resolve taxes

Empty Infusion slots are legal. Arbiter’s Prize is a 30 Resolve hold for Bloodcurse until a high etch rank — community notes say rank 3 may go permanent; treat that as TBA. Unwieldy is 35 for a charged heavy. Tarblighted Trophy is 80 seeking shots. Those buttons compete with Biosampler, Shadow Strike, and every sidearm tap. Slot them only on a combat bar you can pay. Franz still etches the ten you wear after an Etching Needle — do not etch a bag stone you never seat.

If the ten holes are honest and the host is finished, the leftover decision is whether to rip the tree up or start the cycle over.

When should I respec vs start NG+?

Respec the backpack. Do not try to refund a first-run Glimpse tree as if it were Iconoclast. You can swap Shell, Seal, melee, sidearm, and Tarstones at a beacon (stones also swap in the menu). Weapon paths at Franz are the flexible half. Shell memories are the sticky half. A full max roster — four lines on all eight hosts — typically waits for NG+. Exact respec coin, Glimpse refunds, and NG+ carry rules stay TBA.

Respec when the fight type changed, not when a list shamed you

Wrong Seal for the tell, panic shots, or a red you tried to Guard — that is a Beacon swap and a tips habit, not a new Shell tree. If Axe and Dagger is landing and Duality is seated, keep the Tiel lane. If Great Martyr’s recovery is eating you after the Warden, swap the blade or the Seal before you dip Proxima’s leftover Glimpses into a third host. The beginner guide is the Harros-to-first-rest loop; this page is only the pairing you wear after that rest exists.

NG+ is the other four lines, not a shame reset

Community-observed first-run math does not cover eight max trees. Unlock the corpses. Finish one or two kits. Wear the others as switchable bodies. A full Glimpse clear typically wants NG+. Do not sit in New Game hour twenty ripping a finished Tiel tree because a thumbnail said Proxima is S-tier — this page will not publish that board. Walk the next Beacon on the walkthrough; come back here when a named melee or the Warden actually changes the pair.

Mortal Shell II builds FAQ

What is the best Mortal Shell II build?

There is no verified S-tier list. Pair one reachable Shell with one melee, one Seal, and a thin Tarstone set. Early lanes: Proxima, Tiel, or Eredrim after the Warden.

Do Mortal Shell II builds use classes?

No class tree. You possess Shells and equip a Seal, weapon, sidearm, and up to ten Tarstones.

Which Mortal Shell II shell should I build first?

Tiel or Proxima at Widow’s Overlook. Commit Glimpses to one of those two. Move to Eredrim only after the Warden if trades are what kill you.

Can I respec a Mortal Shell II build?

Swap Shell, Seal, weapon, and stones at a Beacon (stones also swap in the menu). Weapons respec more freely than Shell Glimpse spend. Exact refund costs stay TBA. Full eight-host max typically needs NG+.

Should Mortal Shell II builds include Harros?

No. Harros is prologue only. He is not one of the eight playable hosts.

How many Tarstones can a Mortal Shell II build equip?

Max ten: 4 Support, 2 Combat, 2 Infusion, 2 Ability. Franz etches the ten you wear after an Etching Needle.

What Seal should I use on a Mortal Shell II build?

One Seal. Infinite for clean telegraphed 1v1. Vatra when adds or angles are messy. Untarnished while you learn or on Eredrim’s Guard/riposte. A fourth Seal near Marrow Keep disables achievements.

Do Mortal Shell II sidearms count as the build?

They are a Resolve tap, not a fifth class. Forgotten Crossbow or Nail Shot can poke after Proxima’s hook. Panic fire dumps Biosampler and the weapon skill.

How many Glimpses does a Mortal Shell II build need?

Community-observed: about 27 Glimpses finish four skill lines on one Shell. Do not spread that budget across eight portraits on a first run.
