What do I do after the Harros prologue?

Harros is a tutorial husk, not a keeper. If you logged enough Open Beta hours, the prologue is skippable. Play it if you have not: it is self-explanatory, and it hides one missable achievement (trophy name TBA). Either way, **Harros is not one of the eight playable shells**. You leave him at Marrow Keep and start the real opening.

  • Do01Finish Harros, or skip the prologue if your beta hours unlock the skip — grab the missable if you care about trophies
  • Do02Talk to the Shell Keeper in Marrow Keep and take the coordinates for two starting Shells plus nearby weapons
  • Do03Go left toward Sester Genessa: pick up a Ventrium (the opening “vent”) for the starting melee, then complete the combat trial for the Infinite Seal
  • Do04Leave the fourth nearby Seal alone — it disables achievements until NG+
  • Do05See Franz at the Tarforge and push starting Iconoclast toward +3 / +4
  • Do06See Merrick on the other side of the Keep: first talk gives a map to the Forgotten Crossbow; he also sells other weapon maps and sometimes flask upgrades
  • Do07Open the previously blocked left path, cross the bridge, rest at the Beacon, then possess Proxima at the water makeshift Beacon
  • Do08Loot the nearby minigun-style sidearm and the strong melee behind her Beacon (look down) — names TBA on this page
  • Do09Cleanse every corrupted Beacon you touch and carry Ova back to Marrow Keep before you start a second Shell

Marrow Keep is the hub, not a dungeon

The Shell Keeper, Franz, and Merrick are the three talks that turn a lost first hour into a route. The Keeper marks two early hosts so you are not guessing which corpse is legal. Franz is the Tarforge. Merrick is the shop: the Forgotten Crossbow map is the first-talk payoff, and later maps plus flask upgrades are why you return instead of vendoring blindly.

Left path before the long walk

Sester Genessa’s side of the Keep is the short combat tutorial that actually matters: a Ventrium for Iconoclast, then a trial that grants Infinite Seal. Do that before you chase a second region. The Keep is compact; the waste is leaving without a Seal, a map, and a +3 spend.

Once those three talks are done, the next lock is which Seal you actually equip — you only wear one.

Which Seal should I take first?

You equip one Seal. The rest sit in inventory. Infinite, Untarnished, and Vatra are the three you should learn in the opening hours. A fourth Seal sits nearby and disables achievements — leave it for NG+. There is no stamina check behind any of them; timing is the check, Resolve is the spend after.

Infinite Seal combat trial near Sester Genessa in Mortal Shell II
If you…EquipWhat it does
Learned Harden in Mortal Shell 1VatraHarden / Perfect Harden — the returning absorb, now on a Seal
Want a high-risk first hoursInfiniteParry with stagger; the left-path trial grants it
Want a balanced Guard defaultUntarnishedGuard / Perfect Guard — fewer punishes than a missed parry
See a fourth Seal next to the trialDo not equip itDisables achievements — NG+ only (name TBA; Slayer / Gloomslayer aliases appear in writeups)

Lock one Seal per fight type

Swap at a beacon when the enemy set changes, not mid-combo. Infinite is the trial reward on the left path, so it is the fastest first pickup if you want Parry. Untarnished is the safer default if you are still learning tells. Vatra is the returning Harden from the previous game — take it when you already trust that timing. Posture breaks and executions sit at a higher layer; the combat page covers the break window. This page only needs you wearing one Seal before you wander.

Do not spend Resolve to “make the Seal work”

The Seal is the defensive tool. Resolve fuels Shell abilities, weapon skills, and sidearms. Panic shots do not buy a parry window. If the trial feels inconsistent, you are late on the tell — change Seal at the next rest rather than dumping the meter into Nail Shot.

With one Seal locked, the next waste is putting Glimpses into every corpse you find instead of one host.

How do I pick a first Shell without wasting Glimpses?

The eight playable Mortal Shell II shells are Tiel, Eredrim, Proxima, Lazlo, Genessa, Smert, Sariel, and Gragu. Unlock routes live on shells. This page only picks a first host. Glimpses buy that Shell’s skill lines. Community-observed: about 27 Glimpses unlocks all four lines on one Shell. Glimpses are limited, so do not spread them. Harros is not in this table.

Possessing Proxima at the water makeshift Beacon after leaving Harros
ShellFirst-hours note
ProximaStrong early. Possess at the water makeshift Beacon after the left-path bridge
TielPlayable eight — do not Glimpse-split with Proxima in hour one
EredrimPlayable eight — later unlock; not the opening possess
LazloPlayable eight
GenessaPlayable eight (Sester Genessa the Wayward) — not the NPC talk at the Keep
SmertPlayable eight
SarielPlayable eight
GraguPlayable eight

Possess Proxima on the water Beacon

From Marrow Keep, take the previously blocked left path, cross the bridge, save at the Beacon, then interact at the water makeshift Beacon to possess Proxima. That interact is the first real host. Nearby: a minigun-style sidearm (name TBA) and a strong melee behind her Beacon if you look down (name TBA — log it on weapons). Proxima’s lightning plus a summon can flinch large Grisha (alias Gishca in some writeups — this page uses Grisha). A Grisha pup drop is a consumable / summon; exact item name TBA.

Commit Glimpses to one Shell

Cleansing Beacons is how you earn Glimpses for Shell skill lines. Bank them on Proxima (or whichever host you actually fight in) until the four lines are open. Switching hosts at a Beacon or the Shell Keeper is free; splitting Glimpses is not. A “try all eight” first day is how you reach the first boss with no finished line.

Once Proxima is possessed, the next habit is cleansing every Beacon you can reach — that is also how flasks and fast travel come online.

When should I cleanse a Beacon?

Always. Most beacons start corrupted. Cleanse them as soon as you can survive the interior challenge. After a cleanse you rest, fast travel (Mether’s Pulse / Breath), and take Ova back to Marrow Keep for the story beat. Skipping a corrupted Beacon is skipping a rest, a flask upgrade, and Glimpses you will not find later in the same density.

After a cleanseWhy it matters in the first hours
OvaStory item — carry it to Marrow Keep, do not leave it on the floor
GlimpsesFeed one Shell’s four skill lines — about 27 for a full set on one host (community-observed)
FlasksGet stronger as you cleanse; Merrick also sells flask upgrades sometimes
Rest / fast travelUnlocked after cleanse — this is the “you can travel” checkpoint this guide ends on
Nearby enemiesRespawn on rest — treat a new Beacon as a reset, not a safe AFK spot

Cleanse before you hunt a second Shell

A second corpse does not help if you cannot rest. The opening rule is: Beacon first, optional loot second. Dual-wield melee plus a Duality Tarstone can spawn near a Beacon and double attacks for that weapon type — community-observed; exact doubling TBA. Pick that up after the cleanse, not instead of it. Full stone rules: tarstones.

Return to the Keep with Ova

Ova is not vendor trash. Take it to Marrow Keep, then use the new rest to swap Seal or Shell if the last fight punished the wrong one. The walkthrough is the Beacon order after this habit is automatic.

Franz is the spend that makes the next cleanse cheaper — upgrade the weapon you are actually swinging, not a sidearm you panic-fire.

What should I upgrade at the Tarforge first?

Franz runs the Tarforge in Marrow Keep. Starting melee is Iconoclast. Push it to about +3 / +4 in the opening hours. Later weapons often drop at at least +3, so the early Iconoclast spend is not stranded — community-observed. Do not park every resource in a sidearm you dump Resolve into.

UpgradeFirst-hours rule
Iconoclast (starting melee)Take it to about +3 / +4 at Franz — later melee often starts at +3 anyway
Ventrium / early smithing pickupSpend the left-path vent on Iconoclast, not on a sidearm you have not found
Forgotten CrossbowMerrick’s first map → Flooded Village crypt after a key — solid early sidearm; perforation Tarstone synergy is community-observed (stone name TBA)
Nail Shot (starting sidearm)Keep it as a Resolve tap, not a dump — panic fire is the waste
Duality TarstonePairs with a dual-wield melee near a Beacon; doubles that weapon type’s attacks (exact multiplier TBA)
Tarstone capTen equipped (Support / Combat / Infusion / Ability). Do not hoard every drop before you have a host

Merrick’s map is a weapon, not a detour

First talk with Merrick gives the Forgotten Crossbow map. The bow sits in a Flooded Village crypt after a key. That is an early sidearms pickup with perforation-stone synergy (community-observed). Buy other weapon maps from him when you have coin; skip flask upgrades only if you are already cleansing Beacons on pace.

Resolve is the real upgrade check

Weapon level does not fix a dry Resolve bar. Sidearm shots, Shell abilities, and weapon skills all spend it. If Iconoclast is +4 and you still die with an empty meter, the next page is combat and tips, not another Franz click.

If the opening still feels wasted, it is usually one of the process errors below — not a missing legendary name.

Which beginner mistakes waste the opening hours?

Scan this before you leave Marrow Keep again. It is the executable checklist this Mortal Shell II beginner guide is for — situation to action, not another loop recap.

MistakeFix
Treating Harros as a ninth ShellLeave him. Count eight on shells
Skipping the prologue missable, then caring about trophiesOne missable lives in Harros — name TBA; play the prologue if you want it
Equipping the fourth nearby SealIt disables achievements — NG+ only
Spreading Glimpses across two Shells in hour oneAbout 27 Glimpses finish four lines on one host — commit
Walking past a corrupted BeaconCleanse, take Ova, rest — beacons
Panic-dumping Resolve into sidearmsThe Seal is the defence; shots are a spend — combat
Saving all Iconoclast materials for a “better” meleeLater weapons often start at +3; +3 / +4 now is not stranded
Ignoring Merrick’s first talkThat is the Forgotten Crossbow map
Looting Duality / dual-wield and skipping the Beacon cleanseCleanse first; the stone does not replace rest
Chasing all eight Shells before you can fast travelPossess Proxima, then follow walkthrough

One habit that fixes most of them

Before you leave a rest, confirm four things: one Seal equipped, Ova delivered if you just cleansed, Glimpses still assigned to the Shell you fight in, and Resolve not sitting empty from Nail Shot spam. Two seconds there prevents most wasted opening hours.

When that loop is automatic, the next page is the roster itself — unlock routes, not another “how to play.”

Mortal Shell II beginner FAQ

How do I start Mortal Shell II as a beginner?

Finish or skip the Harros prologue, talk to the Shell Keeper / Franz / Merrick at Marrow Keep, equip one Seal, possess a first Shell, cleanse a Beacon, and spend Resolve. This Mortal Shell II beginner guide is that loop — not a full platinum route.

Is Harros one of the eight Mortal Shell II shells?

No. Harros is prologue / early only. The eight playable Shells are Tiel, Eredrim, Proxima, Lazlo, Genessa, Smert, Sariel, and Gragu.

Does Mortal Shell II have a stamina bar?

No. Resolve is the spend for Shell abilities, weapon skills, and sidearms. Panic sidearm shots waste it.

Do I need Mortal Shell 1 for this beginner guide?

No. Mortal Shell II is a standalone sequel. Vatra is the returning Harden, now on a Seal — you can learn it here.

Which Seal should I take first in Mortal Shell II?

Infinite (Parry) from the left-path combat trial, Untarnished (Guard) if you want a safer default, or Vatra (Harden) if you already know that timing. Leave the fourth nearby Seal for NG+ — it disables achievements.

Which Shell should I pick first?

Proxima, possessed at the water makeshift Beacon after the left-path bridge. Put Glimpses into her four lines (about 27 for a full set, community-observed) instead of splitting across the roster — shells.

When should I cleanse a Beacon?

Always, as soon as you can survive the interior. Cleanse yields Ova, Glimpses, stronger flasks, rest, and fast travel — beacons.

What should I upgrade at the Tarforge first?

Iconoclast to about +3 / +4 at Franz. Later weapons often start at +3, so the spend is not wasted. Do not dump early materials into panic sidearms.

Where is the Forgotten Crossbow?

Merrick’s first talk gives the map. It sits in a Flooded Village crypt after a key — sidearms.

What should I read next?

The shells roster, then combat for posture and executions, then the walkthrough Beacon route.
